Belt Bag from Conemaugh Leather
Long Hunter Beavertail Purse with Stitched Edge

Hand-Crafted Leather Black Powder Hunting Bags

These bags are genuinely hand-crafted – unlike bags that rely on a sewing machine or equipment to precisely cut and punch the leather - these bags are cut, punched and stitched (without the use of a stitching awl) by hand, resulting in a rustic look.  Making bags in this manner is more time-consuming, but the result is a bag you’ll be proud to own and carry.

These bags are made by a flintlock hunter who also has a keen interest in the period of American history (1750 – 1800) when present-day western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia was the American frontier. The bag designs are the result of extensive research to recreate historically accurate 18th century hunting bags that meet the needs of black powder shooters and reenactors.

The leather used to make these bags is heavy (5 – 6 oz.) oil-tanned cowhide, which produces an extremely durable bag that will stand up to all types of weather and hard use.  They are stitched with a waxed artificial sinew thread that will not rot.  The leather is treated with mink oil prior to assembly and a second treatment is applied upon final assembly.

Features include:

  • Large capacity (approximately 8”x9”) with gusseted main compartment

  • Large exterior crescent pocket (under front flap)

  • Interior pocket

  • Adjustable leather shoulder strap

Three basic bag designs are offered:

  • The Frontiersman – a traditional style with four front flap design options (beavertail, bucktail, rounded and envelope).  Starting at $125.00

  • The Longhunter – a D-shaped bag used in many areas of the colonies during the 18th century.  Two flap designs are offered: beavertail or bucktail. Starting at $140.00

  • Southern – a smaller, simpler style with two front flap design options (triangle and square with rounded corners).  Starting at $90.00

Four different decorative finishes are available for the front flap: a whip stitch using leather lacing (+$10); a running stitch using leather lacing (+$10); a running stitch using artificial sinew (+$10); and a cross stitch using artificial sinew (+$15).  An optional antler tip front flap closure is available for all designs.

I’m also willing to work with you on custom designs.
