Frontiersman Bucktail with Lorraine Cross Bag

A traditional style bag used in many areas of the colonies during the 18th century.  The back and flap are one piece of leather, with the shoulder straps sewn onto the back of the bag. Bag measures approximately 8” W X 9” H with a 2” tapered gusset.  Features include: a bucktail front flap with a blue Cross of Lorraine inlay and flap edge trimmed with lacing; a large (approximately 4” W X 6” H) exterior crescent pocket (under front flap); interior 4” W X 2” H rectangular interior pocket; and adjustable 1.25” wide leather shoulder strap.  The leather used to make this bag is heavy (5 – 6 oz.) oil-tanned cowhide, which produces an extremely durable bag that will stand up to all types of weather and hard use.  Stitched with artificial sinew that will not rot.  The leather is treated with mink oil prior to assembly and a second treatment is applied upon final assembly.

French Jesuit missionaries and settlers to the New World carried the Cross of Lorraine c. 1750–1810. Native peoples they encountered adopted the symbol mainly because the two-armed cross resembled a dragonfly, which held a deep spiritual meaning.
